The use of nitrogen to inflate tyres instead of compressed air is recommended by FAA Circular AC43.13-1B - 9-16 and  has the following advantages.

  • Does not support combustion.
  • Holds pressure longer than air - reduces frequency of topping up tyre pressures.

Nitrogen can also be used to inflate the nose gear oleo strut instead of compressed air. Nitrogen is supplied dry and is free from water vapour. Therefore it's use in oleo struts helps to eliminate corrosion inside the oleo cylinder and on the piston. Remember corrosion equals pitting, metal loss and subsequent leakage of hydraulic fluid with the potential for a prop strike.
